I slipped out quietly and called my father. What he had planned for that wedding would change everything.
“If she won’t sign the papers, let the collectors take her. That woman has no family, and nobody’s going to ask about her,” my fiancé said, never imagining I was listening to every word.
It was our wedding day.
My name is Savannah Whitaker. I’m twenty-nine, and for three years I had shared my life with Colton Mercer, a Dallas entrepreneur who was about to close the biggest deal of his career.
That morning I was in our small apartment in Oak Cliff, wearing a wedding dress Colton had rented for forty-five dollars.
“We don’t need to waste money on nonsense, babe. When my company takes off, you’ll have everything you want,” he had promised.
I believed him.
For three years I cooked, cleaned, and worked overtime to help him. When his tech company, Nexus Digital, was about to go under, mysterious investors appeared and saved it. Colton always said those investors had recognized his talent.
I never told him why they had decided to trust him.
At eight in the morning, while I waited for the car that would take me to the hotel where we’d hold the wedding, my mother called.
“Savannah, go out the service stairs right now. Don’t open the front door.”
Her voice was shaking.
“Mom, what’s going on?”
“Your father is waiting downstairs. Listen to me, sweetheart. Your life is in danger.”
I left without taking off the dress.
A black SUV was waiting on the street. My father opened the door and practically lifted me inside. My mother was crying.
“You need to see this,” she whispered, handing me a tablet.
The screen showed the security camera outside my apartment door. Colton stood next to Brielle, his personal assistant. She had a hand on her stomach.
She was pregnant.
“Are you really going to marry that nobody?” Brielle asked.
Colton laughed. “Of course not. First I need her to sign as guarantor on a one-million-dollar loan. Then we can get rid of her.”
The world stopped.
“And if she can’t pay?” Brielle asked.
“That’s her problem. Rocco’s guys know how to collect.”
Behind them stood three strangers. One held a folder. Another checked his phone.
Brielle stroked her belly and spoke again. “What about my brother? The doctors say he needs a kidney, fast.”
Colton answered with a terrifying calm. “Savannah has the same blood type. I got hold of her medical records. Those underground doctors will handle the rest. We just need her to sign the papers they prepared.”
My mother held me when she saw me start to tremble.
The man I had loved planned to bury me in debt, hand me over to criminals, and use my body to save his mistress’s brother.
On the screen, Colton checked his watch. “It’s getting late. Break down the door. If she resists, force her.”
One of the men pulled out a tool and began pounding the lock.
Colton added something I will never forget. “I don’t care what happens to her afterward. That woman already served her purpose in my life.”
My father clenched his fists.
I sat motionless, watching them smash the door of the home where I had spent three years dreaming of a family.
Then my father opened a briefcase and set documents in front of me, stamped with the seal of a powerful financial group.
“Savannah, it’s time you took back your rightful place.”
And I understood that Colton was about to make the biggest mistake of his life.
PART 2
“Dad, I want Colton to walk into his party believing he has everything,” I said as the SUV headed north toward Highland Park. “Then we’ll take away what he never should have had.”
My father looked at me in surprise.
For three years I had voluntarily given up the privileges of my family. My full name was Savannah Reed Whitaker, only child of the founders of Altamira Capital Group, one of the most important private investment firms in the country. I chaired its board of directors.
When I met Colton, I decided to hide my wealth. I wanted someone to love me without thinking about my last name or my parents’ money. I never imagined I would end up financing the man who planned to destroy me.
Nexus Digital had survived on investments I personally approved through companies our group managed. Colton had no idea I was behind that capital.
“We have another problem,” my father said. “The auditors found irregular transfers of more than six hundred fifty thousand dollars. Colton has been forging invoices and diverting investor funds.”
My heart finished breaking. He hadn’t only deceived me as a woman. He had used my trust to commit fraud.
“I want every file,” I said. “And I want the lawyers to file the complaints.”
“We can cancel the pending funding right now.”
“Not yet. First I want to watch him show off in front of his guests.”
Hours later we arrived at a luxury hotel in Uptown. While my parents coordinated security and the attorneys, I watched the ballroom cameras from a private suite.
Colton was impeccably dressed, accepting congratulations from executives and prospective investors. Brielle wore a white dress and smiled like the luckiest woman in Dallas.
Then his mother, Lorraine, appeared.
“Thank goodness my son got rid of Savannah!” she announced in front of several guests. “That gold digger ran off with another man because she wanted money. Luckily, Brielle actually belongs in our family.”
Women began to murmur.
“Besides, my first grandchild is on the way,” Lorraine added. “Not like that little nobody who didn’t even come from a decent family.”
A pang went through my chest. I had cared for that woman during a hospital stay. I had put up with her contempt, cooked her meals, and quietly paid for several of her treatments. Now she was mocking me in front of everyone.
At that moment my two best friends came running in, Tamara and Jolene, in the pink dresses we’d picked for my bridesmaids.
“Colton!” Tamara shouted. “Where is Savannah? We went to get her and found her apartment destroyed.”
Colton’s smile fell. “My fiancée decided to leave me.”
“Liar!” Jolene said. “Savannah helped you when you had absolutely nothing. And now you’re here with your mistress!”
Brielle stormed over. “Get out of my wedding, you broke losers!”
Then she threw her glass of wine at Tamara. When Jolene tried to defend her, Lorraine ordered the guards to remove them both. I watched them get shoved toward the door while Colton stood still, smirking.
That was enough.
“Dad, go ahead with the notifications. Tell the lawyers to act now.”
I put a coat over my wedding dress and went down to the ballroom with my security team. Just as Colton announced over the microphone the arrival of the chairman of Altamira Capital Group, the enormous doors opened.
